Gift Giving Etiquette in Other Countries

Gift giving can involve a certain etiquette, that if breached, can lead to embarrassment at the least, and potentially damaged relationships in more serious situations. Whether it’s part of a business trip and cultural exchange, or even visiting family or friends in another part of the world, there are certain gift giving rules and expectations that are culturally significant and must be observed.

Gift giving etiquette mainly centers around the following questions: Who is the recipient, what type of gift is expected, what is the process for giving the gift, and is there an expectation of reciprocity?

In Western cultures, the identity of the recipient is perhaps the single most important factor in gift giving. Specifically, the nature of the relationship between giver and receiver is key. The closer the relationship, the more personal the gift that is allowed. Closer relationships also allow for more informal gift giving occasions (not just on holidays or special days of celebration) as well as an increased expectation for both parties to reciprocate the gifts. Anyone who has ever experienced one of those awkward moments receiving a gift from an unexpected source knows exactly just how important the observance of these customs is.

With more more international business bringing about cross-cultural relationships, it’s important to note that not all gift giving rules of etiquette are universal. Some are unique to their culture.

In China, for example, it’s quite common, even expected for the giver to ask the recipient what gift he or she would like to receive. In business relationships, gift giving is always reciprocal and a failure to observe this custom could destroy an otherwise prosperous relationship. The Chinese also are very generous with their gift giving. Someone who obviously has skimped on a gift becomes known as an “iron rooster.” As the concepts of balance and harmony are valued in Chinese culture, it’s customary to give gifts that come in pairs or sets rather than individual items.

In Saudi Arabia, gifts are only exchanged between individuals who are considered the most intimate of friends; therefore, a gift for a casual business acquaintance may appear too forward and damage the relationship. If buying for a Saudi man, never buy gold or silk. That is an inappropriate gift for a male in the culture. One other piece of advice, when giving a gift in Saudi Arabia, it is customary to offer it with the right hand. To do otherwise is considered offensive.

Fortunately, Gifts that Give offers a variety of high quality, name brand gift items that will be acceptable in any culture (provided the aforementioned rules are followed). Not only will the recipient be honored by a present from Gifts that Give, but an additional honor is bestowed when Gifts that Give contributes 20% of the purchase price to a charity of your choice, because charitable gift giving is appropriate in any culture.

Five Charitable Giving Gifts for College Students

Finding charitable giving gifts for college students isn't that hard. Not only has this age of student grown up in one of the most affluent times in history, but also the most technologically advanced. This means this generation has a great affinity for gadgets, which sometimes means sometimes requires taking out a second mortgage. You want to get something that they’ll appreciate and be able to use and still be able to afford to pay the tuition bills. And buy food.

That’s where Gifts that Give comes in. Gifts that Give is an online merchant that provides a tremendous variety of ideas for charitable giving gifts. Not only that, but they donate a portion of the purchase price — 20 percent —to a named charitable cause. Your "regular" gifts become charitable giving gifts any time you make a purchase and specify a nonprofit or charitable giving organization. This means if you purchase a $200 gift, $40 will be donated to any nonprofit you choose.

You may not be able to buy your college student a new laptop, but with the charitable giving gifts at Gifts that Give, you can buy a very stylish laptop sleeve or pillow. These come in several styles and are always high quality, designer brands. They’ll be the envy of their classmates when they pull out their laptop encased in an attractive Jonathan Adler print, and only the two of you will know the greater good you've given.

You’ll also find cases and covers especially designed for MacBooks, iPhones, and iPads as well. If your college student has an e-reader, there are some great binders for those, too. Whether it’s ear buds for listening to podcasts or a designer backpack to carry actual books (most schools still use these antiques, much to your student's chagrin), your college student will be the big man/woman on campus with the charitable giving gifts offered at Gifts that Give.

The most appealing part of Gifts that Give though is their connection to charities. This younger generation isn’t just interested in technology; they’re also one of the most civic-minded and charitable generations ever! Your college student will love not just the charitable giving gifts you selected, but the contribution to the a cause that supports the environment, civil rights, the arts, or whatever charity your college student is passionate about.

This year, do something that will really impress your college student. Stop trying to stay ahead to the technology curve. It’s a losing battle because of the rapid changes and high prices. Instead, give your college student some stylish charitable giving gifts as an accessory for those electronics and support a cause that’s meaningful as well. They’ll get some charitable giving gifts they can really use and appreciate. You can make it even more special, and specify the donation from your charitable giving gifts to support your student's favorite nonprofit organization, maybe even one that is supporting them!

How Charitable Giving Works

Ecommerce makes charitable giving more convenient, but not how you might think. Oh sure, there are electronic payment options at virtually every charitable giving website out there, but there’s one unique option out there that has changed the way we think about charitable giving.

One of the great struggles for all of us is separating our need to give back with our desire for material items, especially as the economy slowly recovers. However, according to several organizations and think tanks, charitable giving was on the rise in 2011, and 2012 is filled with expectations and hope.

According to the American Association of Fundraising Counsel, in 2010 Americans gave more than $290.89 billion to their favorite charitable giving organizations, which was up 3.8% from the previous year. $211.77 billion of that was given by individuals and households, which was 73% of all charitable giving dollars. This figure is further borne out by the National Park Service, which says that 80% of their own philanthropic giving comes from individuals and bequests. The remaining amount comes from corporations and foundations.

And just as there are many different charitable giving organizations, the web also features a plethora of ecommerce sites that make shopping online far preferable for many than getting out to traditional brick-and-mortar stores and markets. No fighting traffic, looking for a parking spot or braving inclement weather only to find that the store doesn’t have the item you’re looking for. By shopping online, you can easily browse for what you’re looking for and compare prices. The item you want is always in stock and oftentimes customers can finds some great deals on line that aren’t available in the physical stores.

Gifts that Give have managed to combine charitable giving and online shopping into one experience, making it easier for people to both shop and give at the same time. On the website, you have access to thousands of name brand, high-quality gift items in as many gift categories as you can imagine, many of which can’t be found in stores.

Best of all, you’ll get to take advantage of what makes Gifts that Give special in the marketplace: the ability to attach a charitable giving contribution to your purchase. For every five dollars spent, Gifts that Give will designate a dollar toward the charity or special cause that you choose. There are literally thousands of those to choose from as well, from national organizations like the American Heart Association to charities and organizations serving your own community.

What would make a better gift for someone you care about than one of the unique, high-quality items offered by Gifts that Give as well as the knowledge that a portion of the purchase price for that gift has been “payed forward” to a worthy cause?

Finding Gift Ideas - The History of Valentine’s Day

In finding gift ideas for your special someone for Valentine's Day, it may help to understand the history of the holiday. Valentine’s Day wasn’t created by greeting card companies or florists. Gift giving has a long and rich tradition that spans across cultures. Valentine’s Day and its gift ideas evolved from one of those traditions into what we celebrate today.

The holiday dates back to the ancient Roman feast of Lupercalia, a three day rite that centered around the Lupa, the she-wolf who legend says suckled the founders of Rome, Romulus and Remus. Sacrifices would be made to the gods and young men would run through the streets of Rome with makeshift whips fashioned from the skins of the sacrificed animals. Women and young girls would line the streets hoping receive a lash from one of the whips which was supposed to guarantee fertility and reduce pain during childbirth. (This is not one of the gift ideas we suggest!)

It wasn’t until the 14th century, however, that the holiday began to be associated with love and romance. By that point, Pagan feasts like Lupercalia had been replaced by celebrations of Christian figures and saints. The Catholic church chose to honor two martyrs who were known as Valentine in place of Lupercalia, which really put a damper on some of the more. . . earthy gift ideas that had been going around.

It was poet Geoffery Chaucer who made the first known association of Valentine’s Day and love when he wrote about birds choosing their mates on St. Valentine’s Day (hence the term “lovebirds” as well). Birds are nice gift ideas, but a bit messy.

The ensuing Middle Ages were a time when courtly love was celebrated and St. Valentine’s Day became the centerpiece. It is believed the first Valentine gift was given by the Duke of Orleans, imprisoned in the Tower of London,  who wrote a poem to his wife in honor of the day, referring to her as his “sweet Valentine.” Little did he know he was giving birth to the greeting card industry, and all the gift ideas that followed.

Flash forward to Victorian England where, with the creation of mail delivery, it became customary to send Valentine’s messages to others. These would often be handmade and embroidered with ribbon and lace. Later, factories emerged to make these gifts. Additionally, gift ideas such as chocolates and flowers would accompany the message.

The American contribution came in the form the greeting card. Apparently Americans weren’t creative enough to come up with their own Valentine’s messages and gift ideas, so they outsourced it. Greeting card companies would create a romantic message contained within a card that could be bought and sent.

Through colonization, Valentine’s Day became popular the world over and is practiced in similar forms throughout the world.

So if you’re thinking that coming up with gift ideas for Valentine’s Day is difficult, just remember, it’s a lot easier now than it used to be, and Gifts that Give can help you with your choices. Not only do we offer some high-end designer gifts, we give 20% of your purchase to your favorite charitable organization. So, $1 out of every $5 is given as a charitable gift to the nonprofit of your choice. And I’m sure that special someone will greatly appreciate the card, flowers, and other gift ideas rather than a goat or a lashing from an animal skin whip.

Gift Ideas for Valentine's Day

Fresh gift ideas might be hard to come by with Christmas just past, but Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. The importance of selecting just the right gift to express your affection for that special loved one is still something many consumers worry about. Valentine's Day gift ideas should reflect that connection with the most important people in your life.

First of all, whether you’re one half of a young couple or seasoned Valentine’s veterans, think outside the box with Gifts that Give. Twenty percent of the cost of any purchased gift goes to a charity of your choice. So not only will your gift recipient love his or her present, he or she will enjoy the peace of mind that comes with helping others.

Gifts that Give has everything you need to find the perfect gift for your sweetheart. Whether you want to honor her with the age-old gift of perfume or want to be a little more adventurous with some designer candles, soaps and bath salts, you can find many name brands at Gifts that Give.

Of course, jewelry is one of those can’t miss gift ideas. And with Gifts that Give, you know you can fulfill her Valentine’s dreams with jewelry from her favorite designers. Knowing she has something for herself to enjoy, plus getting to donate to a charity of choice, means a satisfying Valentine’s Day for everyone.

Valentine’s Day is a perfect opportunity for women to let their men know how special they are. Gifts that Give also has a prolific section of men’s gift ideas.

Is your guy a techie? Does his smartphone or mobile device seem surgically attached to his hand? What about picking out a designer case for that electronic device? It tells him that that what's important to him is important to you, and allows you to at least have the contraption fashionably clothed instead of all scratched up without a cover.

Many men are into sports. A nice golf accessory organizer shows you care about what is important to him and helps him keep track of tees, divot replacers and the like. Or, you could improve his fashion sense with some sports-related gift ideas: a watch, tie clasp, or even cuff links of his favorite baseball team would be an ideal gift.

This year, why not go all out for Valentine’s Day? Instead of simply contributing to the bottom line of the greeting card and chocolate companies, get thoughtful and give back with Gifts that Give.

xFinding Gift Ideas: Why Do We Give?

Finding creative gift ideas can be a real challenge. For many, the fact that Christmas has passed and another season of having to think of something to exchange with friends, loved ones, and co-workers is over is a welcome relief. If that’s you, enjoy your brief respite because Valentine’s Day is right around the corner and probably an assortment of birthdays, weddings, and anniversaries to boot, which means coming up with a whole year's worth of gift ideas.

Gift Giving and Gift Ideas Abound Around the World

Giving gifts is a cultural practice ingrained in all of us across cultural boundaries, rooted in centuries of custom and tradition. We would no sooner show up to certain celebratory events without a gift than we would sit down and eat soup with our hands. Such is the power of tradition. There are even special guide that tell us appropriate gift ideas for anywhere in the world.

No matter what culture you came from, gift giving is a time-honored tradition. Archaeologists have unearthed evidences from ancient cultures across the globe that show the practice of gift giving. Whether it was a token of respect being offered to some ancient monarch or a sacrificial offering put forth to some pagan deity, the offering of gifts has been a sign of respect for thousands of years.

Gift Giving and Gift Ideas Are Steeped In History
In our oldest literature, we see examples of gift giving. Of course, the Bible provides numerous examples from the temple sacrifices in Mosaic Law to the wise men bearing gifts at Jesus’ birth. In epic literature such as Beowulf and King Arthur, it was customary for the thanes and knights to bestow gifts of respect upon their monarchs. In return, after battles won, the monarchs would grant a portion of any captured treasure upon their loyal warriors. Because nothing says "thanks for wiping out our enemies" like a small pile of treasure and a silver gravy boat.

How those traditions morphed into "Secret Santa" gifts and the variety of gift giving opportunities we have today is a long process. To be sure, it's part of our DNA to be constantly thinking about gift ideas.

As the year goes on, and birthdays and celebratory occasions come along, don’t fret about finding new gift ideas. Just remember that to give a gift is an honor, an opportunity to take the time to show your respect to to someone you care about. Because of that, those old maxims "It’s better to give than to receive" and "it’s the though that counts" really hold true, which means you should try to find thoughtful gift ideas.

Don’t get discouraged. It may not be easy to come up with special gift ideas for your dear Great Aunt on her 75th birthday, but your offering, whatever it might be, is a valued treasure, a sign of your infinite respect and affection for that special person.

Five Charitable Gifts that Give Back

There are charitable gifts and there are charitable gifts that actually give twice.

While it's easy to make a donation to any nonprofit organization, you can mix your charitable gifts and your family gifts, and get two gifts for the price of one. That’s why, in 2012, you should consider using Gifts that Give for all your gift-giving opportunities. Because it not only provides you with high quality gift items, but also an opportunity to give to charitable gifts that can be used for tax deductions.

It really doesn’t matter what the occasion or for whom you are buying. Gifts that Give offers gift ideas for everyone. Whether young or old, male or female, for birthdays or holidays, Gifts that Give can cover every gift-giving occasion. And you get to choose which organizations you support.

Looking for a gift for that special woman in your life? We've had more than a few people with their eye on Riedel's Black Tie Bliss Decanter for $195. Top it off with charitable gifts to a nonprofit that's near and dear to her heart. Maybe it's the Susan Komen Foundation or the La Jolla San Diego Heart Institute; buying the Black Tie Bliss Decanter will send $39 in charitable giving to the nonprofit of your choice.

What about that special man? Tired of buying another tie for Father’s Day? Gifts that Give offers a myriad of gifts that men will enjoy from sports-related items to grooming supplies. Is he an outdoorsman? Would a donation to the Sierra Club be meaningful to him? Or maybe he's a sports fan. Give him a set of MLB Chicago Cubs cuff links for $125, and give $25 in his name to the Hutchison Institute for Prevention and Cure of Prostate Cancer.

Gifts that Give has a tremendous selection of items for babies and children. Clothing, stuffed animals, and toys are just some of the items available. Like the PluiePluie rain coat and rain boots or the Bestever Baby Mat Bear, with charitable gifts going to the Ace Mentor Program of America or Children First Head Start in Los Angeles.

And it doesn't stop there. You can buy gifts for pets — sweaters, collars, and accessories of all kinds — for your friends who just love to pamper their four-legged friends. Get a Fab Dog turtleneck sweater, reversible puffer, or even a raincoat, and send some charitable gifts to the Born To Be Wild Nature Center in Rhode Island.

If you spent 2011 just buying for the sake of buying, then resolve to do better in 2012. Use Gifts that Give for all of your gift-giving needs and multiply the giving with charitable gifts. Ensure that your loved ones get something they will treasure, give charitable gifts that will spread your giving to others, and create a way for you to benefit with your taxes as well.
